There are a few aspects of internships that you should consider and think about when looking for or accepting such a position. Many internships are, of course, unpaid and will require you to do a great deal of work while not compensating you financially for your efforts. This is typically in exchange for the knowledge and experience that such internships should offer you during your residency at any place where you are working as an intern. Because of this, however, it is essential to your success that you be sure any place you wish to intern at will actually provide you with the benefits of internship after your work is complete.
For example, you would not want to do an internship somewhere that would only use you and not actually help you gain anything. If you are an intern and are only performing mediocre tasks without any real learning or experience being gained, you are not getting any real benefit from your work. While interns are often considered the low person on the proverbial totem pole at any workplace, you should still expect to gain some knowledge and usefulness from your experience. You may be expected to perform menial tasks like fetching coffee or running messages, but you should also be getting exposure to how the work is performed and learning what is expected from paid employees.
The key to gaining real benefits from internships is to keep your eyes open and be aware of what is going on around you at all times. You may find an unexpected opportunity to thrive in the workplace and prove your worth beyond free labor. While you should not interfere with the daily routine and activities of the paid employees, you are there to learn after all, you should look for any small chances you may have to prove your own potential worth. Completion of an internship can be a great way to get your foot in the door for real employment at the company, and you should look for opportunities to ensure that.
If the place you are an intern at has a history of hiring interns on as paid employees that is a great sign that you may have an opportunity to do so as well. But do not simply assume that you will be hired just because you are an intern. Try to stand out in positive ways and look for moments to show others that you would be a valuable asset to the company. Find chances to prove your worth and think of your internships as long-term job interviews.
