Although media careers can be quite lucrative, many people are still considering working in the media field. Getting a job in media is very difficult, this is an industry that rarely accepts new comers and most hiring is done through connections and word of mouth. However, for those of you who are willing to go through this ordeal, here are some things to remember when working in media.
Firstly, the term “media” is very broad. There are many different careers to consider when we talk about media. There is print journalism, broadcast journalism, editing, production, publicity, art direction, costume design, casting directors, video editors, technicians, photographers, and many more. When you sit down to choose one of these careers, make sure you think carefully. Each of these careers is very difficult to get into, and after slaving away for months and getting an internship in production for example, you may find that you don’t like it at all.
While you are considering which media careers you will take, consider your education level. Some of these positions require degrees, or sometimes training from a trade school. If you are unwilling to go back to school, you may have to take a bunch of media careers off the list.
Also, think about yourself and think about what you like to do, what you are good at doing, and your personal preferences when it comes to a job. Do you mind if your boss calls you through dinner? Will you be able to get up to cover a story at 4 a.m.? Can you stand to work long hours in front of a computer monitor? Many of the jobs in media have requirements such as these, and these are some of the most important things to remember when working in media.
Another thing to remember is that you yourself must work on independent projects, to keep your resume updated, to get better jobs, and to show your current bosses that you are a hard working individual that is genuinely interested in this field. If you write, keep writing, start a blog or freelance. If you’re looking to go into film, create and edit youtube videos. Take pictures, make connections, work on your own projects. Working on your own projects will also help you stay interested and centered within the field of media you will be working. One thing to remember when working in media careers is to always do the best work you possibly can on every little project you do.
