The Psychology of Shopping and Retail Display Fixtures

People love shopping. Because of this, it's important that retailers make use of this "fact" to obtain as much revenue as they can. By utilizing efficient retail display fixtures, you, as a retailer shall be able to put this strategy into action.

According to a study by Leonard Lee and Dan Ariely of the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), consumers don't really have their objectives pre-determined; these only become concretized as soon as they have wandered through the supermarket's aisles.

This is good news to businesses then. Once a consumer enters their store, they can entice him/her to purchase any of their merchandise. But such a process is too delicate to be left to chance alone - you as a retailer need to do something. Consider these couple of tips:

1. Provide shoppers with a good mix of limited choices.

People love to be given alternatives before they decide on buying a certain product. In a study related to the one mentioned above, researchers from the Northwestern University found out two things:

a. consumers want to have as many options as possible
b. consumers want to be able to decide what to purchase as easily as possible

But the trick to these findings is, these 2 things should be observed in the same process, although at different stages. Of course, as a retail owner, you love to provide your customers with as many options as possible. But more than that, you love to make purchases out of a shopper's browsing around. So which is more essential?

Use retail display fixtures (such as slatwall racks) so you can keep your shoppers' interest in one "setting." These racks are efficient at making virtually anyone's browsing experience easier. At a glance, they can feast their eyes on an array of choices.

These slatwall racks are not that big, so the choice of products that it can display are in a way, limited. As such, the selection process is condensed, and the act of buying something becomes more probable.

2. Make your retail display system easy to navigate

Customers want to have a smooth shopping experience. The need to plan your display system then becomes apparent. Ensure that the customers have enough space to walk on - that there is enough space for them to navigate the area.

In addition, make use of the wonders of retail display fixtures like magazine racks, counter top displays as well as glass display cases. Of course, identify where to appropriately place them. Provide a story out of the arrangement of your display. This is particularly helpful to your customers - shopping is then "full of directions." As you know, no customer likes to get lost in his/her act of finding shopping choices.

With this couple of methods, you will be able to "play" with the mind of your shoppers. In a subtle way, you're able to entice them into making a purchase. Remember, shopping is not truly a matter of pure numbers, but of delicate sentiments. So focus on those sentiments, make use of intelligent retail display fixtures so you can bring your business revenues up!
