Life as a Talk Show Host

Have you ever dreamed about a career as a radio or television talk show host? Do you have a quick tongue and an opinion on nearly everything? Do you like to discuss issues and ideas while sharing your opinion with others? Do you have a viewpoint that just needs to be put across?

If this describes you then you might be well suited for life as a talk show host. Talk show hosts for radio and TV occupy a unique place in our media. Somewhere between entertainers and educators, many talk shows fall into the sphere of what is known as “infotainment.”

Talk shows exist across the spectrum of topics ranging from sports, to politics, to religion, to just about everything in between. If you have a passion, or an area of expertise, and can talk about fluidly then perhaps your calling is to host a talk show on that topic.

Radio is a good place to begin one’s career as a talk show host. What’s more, many successful on-air radio personalities are able to make the jump from radio to TV and wind up working as on-camera talent on network, cable or local TV.

We live in an information hungry age. Nowadays talk shows on radio and TV exist to endlessly debate topics as lofty as foreign policy and as pedestrian as reality TV. Good talk shows about interesting topics are almost always able to find an audience.

If you see yourself living life as a talk show host and as the person with the microphone and the opinion, or as the one with the wherewithal to moderate discussions, or the insight to ask the probing interview questions, then perhaps a career as a talk show host is just where you belong.

However it’s important to remember that radio and television remain competitive fields. Anyone seeking to embark on a career needs to take advantage of every possible opportunity to set them apart from the competition. Attending a broadcast school is a good idea. Even better is to find a school that offers a mentoring program.

Mentoring programs allow student to learn the broadcast business while working in an actual TV or radio station under the tutelage of real working broadcasters. More than just providing first hand experience of what actually keeps a station on the air, programs like this give students the chance to make the valuable contacts and connections needed to gain a foothold in the broadcast business.

Of you’ve got the talent and the drive, then life as a talk show host could be the career you are looking for.
