I came from an excellent State University and I completed with honors. I have a degree in Interdisciplinary Arts that goes along with an honorarium from my division. For the last fifteen years or so, I have worked professionally as an actor, writer and musician.
For fifteen years I have never been asked more than twice about my college degree.
College is fun and possessing a degree was never a hindrance for me to pursue my dreams. However one could ask the question, was it worth it?
College degrees do not value that much in the music industry except if you are into classical music. Definitely not in the genre of rock, hip-hop and pop anyway. As a session musician enrolling yourself in a popular music school might be of excellent help. Nevertheless it's all going to come down to how well you play, and more often than not, who you know.
A degree from a well-regarded movie school such as Julliard or A.C.T might be helpful in acquiring an agent. Nevertheless, you need to realize that the impression you make during your audition will usually come first then followed by your college degree. Degrees can help keep you afloat when you are searching for a job as an actor. You can assure yourself with it but what matters most are the steps you take at present.
My diploma hardly mattered even as a specialist writer. This means that it is merely listed on the resume I displayed in order to land a job. Back in the days, the girl who was my boss must has asked about it. However, in writing what matters most is your overall performance and the individuals you know and this is the same with acting and music.
If I can switch back time, must I spend a number of years of my life studying in order to attain a college degree? Most likely not. I worked in a film alongside a very gifted guy and he was just 19 years old at that time. He just completed highschool and has decided to move to Los Angeles a few days after he acquired his highschool diploma. He'd been working in commercials before I met him and after the film we did together he went on to book a starring part in a network sitcom. After a number of episodes he is still with the tv show. Definitely he made the correct decision when it came to bypassing college.
A degree is a wonderful thing to achieve. In many career fields it demonstrates to employers that you have the ability to start and finish something big. On the other hand, a degree might prevent you from clinching huge roles during the most marketable years of your life, this is in fact true especially when it comes to the entertainment industry.
