Highest Paying Media Careers

Going into the media field seems like the best decision for artistic people who are looking to make some money. Of course, breaking into the media industry is incredibly difficult and it is more likely to be stuck in a low paying job. There are, however, many opportunities to move up and be in one of the highest paying media careers.

An editor-in-chief of a magazine (or a book publishing imprint), can pull down a hefty salary. There is also room for fame, like Graydon Carter (who runs Vanity Fair) and Anna Wintour (who runs Vogue). Any magazine or newspaper has many different sections and editors for each section. However, the editor-in-chief is in charge of everyone and must ensure that the work of the other editors and each department blends to form a smooth final product.

Art Directors also work at both book publishing imprints and magazines, overseeing the visuals of either the magazine or book jackets. At big magazines an art director’s job is considered to be highly creative and expected to make a big impact on the look and feel of a publication. An art director works on creating visual concepts. Art directors get to be in charge of that layout of the publication from start to finish. They experiment with different looks and types of layouts.

Producers who work behind the scenes of network news and at network news shows, such as Dateline, also make an excellent salary and are among the highest paying media careers. Although TV news is fading away and there may be a slip in these salaries in the future, at the moment, Television is more lucrative than print. A producer is responsible for creating the conditions for filming the news. The producer initiates, co-ordinates, supervises and controls matters such as fund-raising, hiring key personnel and arranging for distributors. The producer is involved throughout all phases of a film-making process from development to completion of a project.

Television news anchors also make the list of the highest paying media careers. Of course, a TV news anchor’s salary depends largely on the market, but those anchors who are lucky enough to host the news in big cities (New York, Los Angeles) make major money.

A director of publicity also makes excellent money and becomes one of the highest paying media careers. A senor-level publicity position, like working in book publishing, can net someone from $70K to over $100k. Although publicists outside of publishing can make more publicity can also be a lucrative career choice further down the line. Essentially, the job of a publicist is to increase public interest in his client.
