Does it matter where you reside to be in the music industry?

The music industry is not like, say, the restaurant business. It is not everywhere. Music associated jobs/opportunities for band members tend to come highly concentrated groups with big, empty spaces on the chart in between. Based on that, does your street address really have an effect on your musical career? Of course, the answer is it is dependent. It depends on what you want to do, and it is dependent on how proactive you are.

Consider it, if you intend to work for a particular firm in the music industry then you may have to go after it. For instance, if you are planning to work in a music company with a big label then you might have to move in order to get close to this particular company. On the other hand, if you know you want to run your own label, book shows, be a manager, or so on, an internet connection can help make any location a viable HQ. If you do not live in an region with a music industry presence to speak of, you may have to take a trip sometimes (think of a manager traveling to have a meeting on behalf of their client), but modern technological innovation and a lot hard work will allow you to set up shop just about anywhere.

Networking is a horrible word, but there are advantages to being able to develop working relationships over lunch or a beer in person. The online music industry is thriving and you can use these contacts by exchanging emails once in a while. It can be hard for a music performer if there are few or no venues where you can play. Obviously, touring is a part of your life anyway. Band members that are keen in succeeding are prepared to make tours all over the world, regardless of where they live. Not possessing 100s of venues in town does not mean your profession is over before it even started.

Moreover, success is not guaranteed even when you are a part of the music industry in a huge city. There is so much competition on any kind of given night that it can be even tougher to get people out to your show and get the press to cover it than it is in a small town. It can be advantageous for your career if you are the one show in town. Your place of dwelling may demand you to double your work, but you need to realize that you can still benefit from staying out of a major music scene. Just before you load up your bags, weigh up the pros and cons. You might just realize that wherever you are at present can make things feasible for you.
