There are many different types of advertising schools available to the student: colleges, internships, apprenticeships, community colleges and universities. Advertising colleges or universities are usually part of a larger school that offers courses and degrees in advertising along with many other majors and career choices. Of course, they are located across the United States and around the world, so perhaps the first decision to be made is where to attend one of the many advertising schools.
Advertising schools instruct students on how to change a company’s image to be positive as well as how to increase sales and fatten the business’ bottom line. When the student is reviewing packages from different advertising schools keep those factors in mind. If their brochures and career packets are not inspiring, attractive and representative of whom they are, then they are not the correct school to teach you because how can they teach something they do not practice.
Of course, the budding advertising student should know his own goals before deciding on an advertising school. It’s important that the school chosen will be challenging to the student and that many graduates from that specific school have continued with their advertising career and become successful.
Most advertising schools provide many courses and programs from sales and marketing to visual arts as well as project management. Those that offer many internship programs as well as mentoring business relationships are usually the best, because gaining work experience is critical in this profession. Many of these types of advertising schools also have placement programs which greatly assist students with securing employment after graduation. But beware of believing that the larger the advertising firm to intern in is the best. Many times, students can get lost in that environment so do not overlook the smaller advertising firms that can provide more one-on-one possibilities.
Most advertising schools require at least a high school diploma or GED. Courses in visual arts and English are especially important to complete in high school. Also, the student should be aware that this career choice requires excellent written and verbal communication as well as being able to give great attention to detail. Usually, positions in advertising companies require long hours and can be very demanding. That being said, the chance for advancement with great monetary gains is very possible.
When investigating advertising schools, peruse their websites and read who they say they are in the “about us” area. Read the biographies of their staff, faculty and course instructors as well as their training, degrees and awards. Performing your due diligence before making a decision will ensure that you will choose the ideal advertising school.
